2021 CONCERT SEASON
ASTRONAUTICA - VOICES OF WOMEN IN SPACE
Astronautica - Women in Space is a newly commissioned work of music, voice, and video by women composers, has a libretto drawn from the words of the women who have traveled in outer space and seen our world from a dramatic new perspective. Astronautica is an artistic evocation of the transformation that happens when one sees our small planet set against the endless blackness of space. Without borders. Without the artificial boundaries and that divide – and could well destroy – humankind.

OPEN CALL: RICHARD KENNEDY
THE SHED
NYC
MAY 30 – JUNE 1, 2019
A three-act opera about the evolution of queer, super-intelligent beings
The three-act opera HIR, an apocalyptic creation myth, tells the story of five queer, super-intelligent beings following the implosion of “Nightmerica.” The two Mad Sisters break free from the Same Simulation and free three Rad Sisters, simultaneously liberating a collective intelligence that will rebuild Hirth. Act 1 begins with a great awakening in 2016 that triggers the final Patriarch Ki apocalypse. Act II, set in 3033, emerges from the primordial waters of the Late Flood, creating beings who feel but cannot see. And Act III, set in 4040, continues the story with the Mad Sisters Kundle bending at Hirth gRave while The Rad Sisters are trapped in Kennedy Fried Chicken. They absorb the secrets of the human experience as the 1007-year culture war to annihilate the heterovirus rages on the surface of Hirth. Additional Music by RaShonda Reeves and Tyler Wilcox.

Park Avenue Armory Presents: Star Choir
New York, New York
May 23-24, 2019
Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade are founding members of the collective My Barbarian, who work at the intersection of theater, visual arts, critical practice, and performance to play with social difficulties, theatricalize historic problems, and imagine ways of being together. Realized as drawings, texts, masks, videos, music, installations, and audience interactions, their projects employ fantasy, humor, and clashing aesthetic sensibilities to cleverly critique artistic, political, and social situations. The duo creates and performs a new work, Star Choir, which was developed while serving as Armory artists-in-residence. The 45-minute musical performance tracks a group of humans who attempt to colonize a hostile planet after the Earth’s decline. Following some wonder and violence, a hybrid species is formed. Star Choir is performed by six singers and musicians playing synthesizer, cello, harp, horn, bass and percussion, and with animated projections.
Star Choir is performed with Hai-Ting Chinn, Tomas Cruz, Tomas Fujiwara, Ariadne Greif, La Toya Lewis, Anthony McGlaun, Ethan Philbrick, Riza Printup, RaShonda Reeves, Kyra Sims, Luke Stewart, and Jorell Williams.
